Dry Needling and Cupping in Perth

You've had the massage. You've done the stretches. And that one knot in your shoulder or calf is still there, tight as ever.

Some tight spots need a different tool.

At Vitality Chiropractic in Yokine, our massage therapist Michelle Wu offers dry needling and cupping, often combined with remedial or sports massage.

What are dry needling and cupping?

Dry needling uses very fine, single-use sterile needles placed into tight bands of muscle, often called trigger points. There's no medicine in the needle, which is why it's called 'dry'.

Cupping uses cups that create gentle suction on the skin, lifting the tissue underneath. The cups may stay still or be moved across the muscle. They can leave round marks that fade over a few days.

Why people book it

People ask about dry needling and cupping for:

  • Stubborn knots that massage alone hasn't shifted
  • Tight neck, shoulders and upper back from desk work
  • Tight calves, hamstrings and glutes from running or sport
  • Muscle tension that keeps coming back

The real cost: you

A knot that never lets go is exhausting. It's there when you reach for something, when you turn to reverse the car, when you lie down at night.

You stop noticing how much you're working around it. Get it looked at. Live alive. Live you.

How Michelle works

Michelle checks your health history first, because dry needling and cupping aren't suitable for everyone. She'll explain what she plans to do and why, and you can say no to any part of it.

Most people have dry needling or cupping as part of a remedial or sports massage, so the needles or cups are used on the areas that need them most, and massage does the rest.

Try this right now

Press gently into the muscle between your neck and shoulder, or into your calf. Is there a tight, tender band that sends an ache somewhere else when you press it?

That's what's often called a trigger point. It's the kind of spot Michelle may suggest dry needling or cupping for.

What happens in a session

Michelle goes through your health history, then assesses the tight areas. Needles stay in for a short time, usually a few minutes. Cups may stay in place or glide over the muscle. Then she finishes with massage.

What your session will include

Here's what to expect:

  • A health history and safety check
  • An explanation of what's planned and why, before anything starts
  • Single-use, sterile needles and clean cups
  • Remedial or sports massage around the needling or cupping
  • Aftercare advice, including what to expect over the next day or two
  • Health fund claim on the spot with HICAPS, if you're eligible

Our promise to you

Research on dry needling and cupping is mixed, and people respond differently, so we won't promise a particular result. Michelle will always explain your options honestly, and use them only when she thinks they suit you.

  • You have stubborn knots or tight muscles
  • Massage alone hasn't shifted the tension
  • You'd like to try dry needling or cupping alongside massage

Frequently asked questions

Does dry needling hurt?

Most people feel a small prick, and sometimes a brief twitch or deep ache in the muscle. It shouldn't be painful. Tell Michelle and she'll adjust.

Will cupping leave marks?

Often, yes. Round marks are common and usually fade within a few days. They aren't bruises from an injury.

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

No. They use similar needles, but dry needling targets tight bands in the muscles, while acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine.

How do I book dry needling or cupping?

Book a remedial massage with Michelle online and add a note, or call us on (08) 9201 0566.

Can I claim massage on my health fund?

Many private health funds cover remedial massage under extras. We have HICAPS, so you can claim on the spot if you're eligible. Your rebate depends on your fund and level of cover.

How much does a massage cost?

New clients pay $85 for a 45-minute first massage when booking online. A 90-minute first session is $150. See our pricing page for returning client prices.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly online or by phone.

Can I get an appointment today?

Check our online booking for the next available time, or call (08) 9201 0566. Michelle is often booked about two weeks ahead, so book early if you'd like her.

Can I see a chiropractor and a massage therapist?

Yes. Our massage therapists work alongside our chiropractors, so your care can be joined up. Many clients see both.
