How the guarantee worksWhat is neck pain?
Neck pain is pain or stiffness anywhere from the base of your skull to the top of your shoulders. It's one of the most common reasons people see a chiropractor.
People describe their neck pain in lots of ways:
- Stiffness turning your head, especially to one side
- An ache at the base of the neck or across the top of the shoulders
- Pain between the shoulder blades
- Headaches that start at the base of the skull
- Pain, tingling or pins and needles into the arm or hand (get this checked)
- Waking up with a 'locked' or wry neck
Why it happens
Most neck pain is mechanical, coming from the joints, muscles and discs of the neck. Common contributors include:
- Long hours at a desk or laptop with the head forward
- Phone use and tech neck
- Stress and tension held in the shoulders and jaw
- Sleeping awkwardly, or a pillow that doesn't suit you
- Stiffness in the upper back
- Whiplash and other injuries, including old ones
- Wear-and-tear changes that come with age
The different names neck pain goes by
Neck pain has many labels. If you've been told one of these, here's what it means:
- Wry neck (acute torticollis): you wake up and can't turn your head, often stuck to one side.
- Facet joint pain: the small joints at the back of the neck get irritated or pinched. Often sharp and one-sided, and worse looking up or turning.
- Pinched nerve (cervical radiculopathy): an irritated nerve in the neck that sends pain, tingling or numbness into the shoulder, arm or hand.
- Disc bulge in the neck: the cushion between two vertebrae bulges and can press on a nerve.
- Whiplash: neck pain and stiffness after a car accident or sudden jolt.
- Arthritis (cervical spondylosis): wear-and-tear changes in the neck joints and discs, often stiff in the morning.
- Muscle strain and tension: tight, sore muscles from posture, stress or overuse.
The real cost: you
Neck pain changes how you live without you noticing. You stop checking your blind spot properly. You sleep badly. You sit through meetings rubbing your neck instead of thinking clearly.
The real cost is being distracted from your own life: from work, from the people you love, from the things you enjoy. That's what we want to look at with you. Live alive. Live you.
A note from Geoff
A sore neck makes you want to work on the neck. Stretch it, rub it, crack it. But very often, when I put my hands on someone, the stiffest part isn't the neck at all. It's the upper back underneath it.
When the upper back stiffens and rounds forward, your head drifts forward with it, and your neck has to hold up a 5kg head that's off-centre all day. That's when the stiffness, the clicking and the afternoon ache set in.
So I start with the position of your whole spine, not just the sore spot. Your adjustment is matched to what I find, never a routine, and you go home with stretches chosen for your neck. That's the Vitality Method.
Try this right now
Sit tall and slowly turn your head to the left, as if you're checking your blind spot. Now to the right. Then gently tilt your ear towards each shoulder. Is one side tighter, or does it stop short?
Which way was worse? That one detail tells me a lot about where your neck is stuck.
How we assess neck pain
We start with your story: when it began, what makes it worse, and what it's stopping you doing. Then we check how each level of your neck and upper back moves, test your strength, reflexes and the nerves into your arms, and look at your posture at rest and at a desk.
We screen for warning signs that need medical care instead. If X-rays are clinically justified, we'll explain why before referring you. Then we explain what we've found in plain English.

Frequently asked questions
Can a chiropractor help with neck pain?
Chiropractic care, combined with exercise and advice, may help some people with mechanical neck pain. We assess you first, screen for warning signs, and tell you honestly whether it's a good fit.
What causes neck pain?
Most neck pain is mechanical, coming from the joints, muscles and discs of the neck. Common contributors include desk work, phone use, stress, sleeping awkwardly, a stiff upper back and old injuries such as whiplash.
Why does my neck hurt when I wake up?
Usually your pillow, your sleeping position, or a neck that's already tight from the day before. Sleeping on your stomach is a common culprit. If it keeps happening, it's worth finding out what's behind it.
How long does a stiff neck last?
A simple stiff neck often eases within a few days. If it lasts more than a week, keeps coming back, or comes with headaches, arm pain or pins and needles, get it assessed.
Can neck pain cause headaches?
Yes. Tight muscles and stiff joints at the top of the neck can refer pain into the head, often around the back of the head, the temples or behind the eyes. These are called cervicogenic headaches.
Why does my neck hurt after working at a computer?
Long periods with the head forward and the shoulders rounded put extra load on the muscles and joints of the neck. Screen height, phone use and stress all add to it. Our tech neck page covers this in more detail.
Which pillow is right for neck pain?
There's no single right pillow. The aim is to keep your neck level with the rest of your spine. We can give you advice based on how you sleep.
How many visits will I need?
Everyone is different, so we can't promise a set number of visits. We set goals with you at the start, review your progress regularly, and change the plan if it isn't helping.
Should I see a chiropractor or a physio for neck pain?
Both are registered health professionals who can assess and manage neck pain. Chiropractors focus on how the spine, joints and nervous system work together. Physiotherapists focus on rehabilitation and exercise. Many people see both. What matters most is a thorough assessment and a clear plan.
How do I get rid of a stiff neck at home?
There's a lot you can do yourself. Keep moving gently, take regular breaks from sitting, and try the self-test and tips on this page. If it isn't settling after a week or two, keeps coming back, or you have any of the warning signs on this page, get it assessed.
What happens after my first visit?
You'll leave with a clear explanation of what we found, and what you can do at home straight away. If chiropractic care is a good fit and it's what you want, we'll talk you through a care plan. There's no pressure.
Can I get an appointment today?
Check our online booking for the next available time, or call (08) 9201 0566. We're open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and we'll fit you in as soon as we can.
Is chiropractic safe for neck pain?
For most people, chiropractic care from a registered chiropractor after a proper assessment is low risk. We screen for warning signs first, explain any risks, and use gentle techniques where appropriate. You can say no to any part of your care.
Do I need X-rays or a referral?
No referral is needed. X-rays are only recommended when they're clinically justified, and we'll explain why first. When they are needed, they're bulk billed with a valid Medicare card.
When should I see a GP instead?
See a GP or go to emergency first if you have any of the warning signs listed on this page. If we find anything during your assessment that needs medical care, we'll refer you.
How much does it cost, and can I claim on my health fund?
New clients who book online pay $85 for their first visit. We have HICAPS for on-the-spot claims with eligible private health funds, and your rebate depends on your fund and level of cover. See our pricing page for more.
