Chiropractor for Hip and Knee Pain in Perth

It starts small. A twinge on the stairs. A knee that aches after the morning walk. A hip that complains when you get up from a low chair.

Then, without noticing, you start to shuffle. You can't turn as quickly. You don't trust your footing. And the Saturday round of golf, the bushwalk and the stairs at the footy all start to feel like too much.

Hip and knee pain don't just hurt. They change the way you move through life. At Vitality Chiropractic in Yokine, we look at your feet, knees, hips, pelvis and lower back together, because they all work as a team.

How the guarantee works

What hip and knee pain feels like

Common complaints include:

  • Pain on the outside of the hip, especially lying on that side
  • Groin pain or stiffness getting in and out of the car
  • Knee pain on stairs, squatting or getting up from a chair
  • Stiffness first thing in the morning or after sitting
  • Pain during or after running, walking or golf
  • Hip or buttock pain that links to the lower back
  • Struggling to put your socks and shoes on, or cross your legs
  • Finding it hard to kneel in the garden or get down on the floor with the grandkids
  • Lying awake because the outside of your hip aches when you lie on it
  • A knee that swells, clicks or gives way on uneven ground

Why it happens

Hip and knee pain often has more than one contributor:

  • Tight hips from sitting at a desk all day
  • Flat or collapsed arches letting the knees roll inwards
  • An old sports injury or knee surgery from years ago that changed the way you walk
  • Long hours sitting, which can stiffen the hips and weaken the glutes
  • Wear-and-tear (osteoarthritis) that comes with age
  • Irritated tendons around the hip or knee
  • Running, sport or a sudden jump in activity
  • Foot mechanics and footwear
  • Pain referred from the lower back

The different names hip and knee pain go by

If you've been given a diagnosis, it may be one of these. Here's what each means:

  • Hip osteoarthritis: wear-and-tear changes in the hip joint, often felt as groin pain and stiffness.
  • Gluteal tendinopathy (trochanteric bursitis): pain on the outside of the hip, often worse lying on that side or climbing stairs.
  • Hip flexor strain: pain at the front of the hip, often from sport or long hours sitting.
  • Knee osteoarthritis: wear-and-tear changes in the knee, often stiff after rest.
  • Patellofemoral pain (runner's knee): pain around or behind the kneecap, worse on stairs, squatting or after sitting.
  • ITB syndrome: pain on the outside of the knee, common in runners and cyclists.
  • Referred pain from the lower back: hip or knee pain that's actually coming from the lower back.

The real cost: you

The real cost of bad knees and hips is ageing.

Whatever someone's age, the first thing I see when hips or knees start to go is the shuffle. And when people start to shuffle, they lose confidence. They can't turn on a 20-cent coin anymore. They lose that sense of knowing exactly where their feet are. They trip. Some fall. And each time, they get a little less confident, and move a little less.

In my clinical experience, bad knees and hips age people faster than almost anything else. Walking well, and using your knees and hips properly, is fundamental to life.

Don't let a shuffle become your new normal. Get it looked at, and get back to living fully. Live alive. Live you.

A note from Geoff

I know what a bad knee does to you. At 18, I had a full right knee reconstruction: ACL, MCL and PCL, plus a medial meniscus trim. I went from being a sprinter to watching my quads waste away after part of my patella tendon was taken for the repair. My knee got its strength back, but it's never worked quite right again.

So when I look at a knee or a hip, I don't just look where it hurts. That's not enough, and it won't give you answers. I look at the arches of your feet, the hip joints, your muscle strength, and on X-rays, how much twist there is in your pelvis.

Then we work as a team. I work on your alignment and how your joints move, and our massage therapists, Michelle and Chikako, work on muscle length and deep soft tissue tightness. Together, with specific exercises, we work on how you move. That's the Vitality Method.

Try this right now

Stand next to a bench for safety and balance on one leg for 30 seconds. Then the other. Is one side wobblier? Now sit down on a chair and stand up without using your hands. Does one hip or knee complain more?

Wobble, wince or push off with your hands? Each one tells us something about how you move.

How we assess hip and knee pain

We take a full history, including old injuries and surgery. Then we look at how you walk, squat and balance, check the arches of your feet, and test the movement and strength of your hips, knees, pelvis and lower back.

Where clinically required, X-rays show us how your pelvis and hips are sitting. We also screen for anything that needs a GP, imaging or a specialist, and refer you if that's the right step.

What your plan will include

Frequently asked questions

Can a chiropractor help with hip and knee pain?

Chiropractic care, including mobilisation, soft tissue work and exercise, may help some people with mechanical hip and knee pain, particularly when the lower back and pelvis are involved. We assess first and refer on if you need imaging or a specialist.

What causes hip and knee pain?

Common contributors include long hours sitting, wear-and-tear (osteoarthritis), irritated tendons, running or a sudden jump in activity, foot mechanics, and pain referred from the lower back.

Could my hip pain be coming from my back?

Yes. The lower back can refer pain into the hip and buttock. That's why we check the back as part of every hip assessment.

Can you help with arthritis?

We can't reverse arthritis, but exercise, movement and hands-on care may help some people stay active. We'll give you an honest view after your assessment.

Can a chiropractor help after a knee reconstruction?

Once your surgeon has cleared you, we can look at how your whole leg, pelvis and lower back are working, and help with the stiffness, muscle weakness and changed walking pattern that often follow surgery. We work alongside your surgeon and physio.

Is walking good for knee or hip arthritis?

For most people, yes. Regular walking and strength work are usually recommended for knee and hip osteoarthritis. We'll help you find a level that suits you and work on how you move, so walking feels easier to keep up.

Do I need a knee or hip replacement?

That's a decision for you and your surgeon. What we can do is assess how your hips, knees and lower back are working now, help you understand where you're at, and help you stay as active as possible, whether or not surgery is in your future.

How many visits will I need?

Everyone is different, so we can't promise a set number of visits. We set goals with you at the start, review your progress regularly, and change the plan if it isn't helping.

Should I see a chiropractor or a physio for hip and knee pain?

Both are registered health professionals who can assess and manage hip and knee pain. Chiropractors focus on how the spine, joints and nervous system work together. Physiotherapists focus on rehabilitation and exercise. Many people see both. What matters most is a thorough assessment and a clear plan.

Can I treat hip and knee pain myself at home?

There's a lot you can do yourself. Keep moving gently, take regular breaks from sitting, and try the self-test and tips on this page. If it isn't settling after a week or two, keeps coming back, or you have any of the warning signs on this page, get it assessed.

What happens after my first visit?

You'll leave with a clear explanation of what we found, and what you can do at home straight away. If chiropractic care is a good fit and it's what you want, we'll talk you through a care plan. There's no pressure.

Can I get an appointment today?

Check our online booking for the next available time, or call (08) 9201 0566. We're open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and we'll fit you in as soon as we can.

Is chiropractic safe for hip and knee pain?

For most people, chiropractic care from a registered chiropractor after a proper assessment is low risk. We screen for warning signs first, explain any risks, and use gentle techniques where appropriate. You can say no to any part of your care.

Do I need X-rays or a referral?

No referral is needed. X-rays are only recommended when they're clinically justified, and we'll explain why first. When they are needed, they're bulk billed with a valid Medicare card.

When should I see a GP instead?

See a GP or go to emergency first if you have any of the warning signs listed on this page. If we find anything during your assessment that needs medical care, we'll refer you.

How much does it cost, and can I claim on my health fund?

New clients who book online pay $85 for their first visit. We have HICAPS for on-the-spot claims with eligible private health funds, and your rebate depends on your fund and level of cover. See our pricing page for more.
