Tech Neck and Desk Posture Care in Perth

It catches you by surprise. A group photo lands in the WhatsApp chat, and you're the only one with your head poking forward like a tortoise. Or you're in the background of someone else's photo, and there it is: head forward, and that bump sticking out at the base of your neck.

Here's the catch. Leave it long enough and it can become permanent. That fatty pad can build into a little camel's hump. Turning your head gets harder. Reversing the car gets harder. And slumping on the couch is where you want to be. It's comfortable. It supports your head. It supports the problem.

That's tech neck. Desk workers, professionals, and even young kids are developing it.

How the guarantee works

What tech neck feels like

Your head weighs around 5kg. It should sit balanced on top of your body like a ball on a stick, with your ear lined up over your shoulder. Balanced like that, your neck carries it easily.

But hours of looking down at phones, iPads and laptops, often slumped on the couch, drag the weight of your head forward. Don't believe me? Check your phone's screen time. Four or five hours a day can be a real shock.

With your head always forward of centre, your neck and upper back muscles have to work harder and harder. Over time, the upper back can stiffen, the discs can become wedged and worn, and the posture you've built can become permanent. That's tech neck.

Most people we see have three or more of these:

  • A stiff, achy neck by the end of the working day
  • Tight, sore shoulders and pain between the shoulder blades
  • Headaches that start at the base of the skull
  • Struggling to turn your head fully, for example when reversing the car
  • Your head sitting forward of your shoulders in photos
  • A rounded upper back or a hump at the base of the neck
  • Tingling or pins and needles in the arms or hands (always get this checked)

Why it happens

It has become so normal in modern life that I now see it in children. It's crazy.

On X-rays, I'm seeing more people with a bony spur at the back of the skull, where the neck ligaments attach. It's where the body lays down extra bone as those ligaments work overtime holding the head up. Researchers have reported the same trend in young adults.

Years ago, the classic back problem was lower back pain in tradespeople. Now it's children, students and office workers, all with their heads carried forward. That's tech neck.

The real cost: you

Tech neck doesn't just hurt. It changes how you live. You stop wearing the sundress or the open-neck shirt, and reach for collars and lapels to cover the rounding at the base of your neck. Looking up feels hard, so looking down becomes the default. Sport gets harder.

And it doesn't stay in the neck. As your head drifts forward, your shoulders roll forward too, which can wear on the shoulder joints. Many people with tech neck also develop shoulder problems, often on both sides. Tight muscles at the front of the neck can feed into jaw (TMJ) problems and headaches.

What started as doom scrolling can turn into real physical problems. And yes, there's vanity in it too. If that's what it takes to get you to sort it out, sort it out. Live alive. Live you.

A note from Geoff

Tech neck is now the most common problem I see and treat in clinic. Most people focus on the neck: they stretch it, crack it, and do the chin tucks they saw on Instagram. But in my experience, the real driver is very often the upper back.

Your head weighs around 5kg. Balanced properly, it sits like a ball on a stick. But when your upper back stiffens and rounds forward, your head drifts forward with it, and the load on your neck climbs. A widely quoted figure from Kapandji's Physiology of the Joints suggests every inch (2.5cm) forward adds around 4.5kg (10 pounds).

So I start with the position of your whole spine. Have you lost the natural curves? Is your upper back rounding forward too much? Is your spine shifting to one side? Then we adjust you the way your body needs, not a one-size-fits-all crack, and give you specific stretches for your problem. That's the Vitality Method.

Try this right now

Stand with your back against a wall, heels a few centimetres away. Can the back of your head touch the wall without tipping your chin up? If not, your head may be sitting further forward than you think.

Most people are surprised by what they find. That gap is the clue we start from.

How we assess tech neck

We start with how you work: your hours, your desk, your screens, your phone use and how the pain affects your work and your life outside it.

Then we assess your posture standing and sitting, check how each level of your neck and upper back moves, test the strength of the deep neck and shoulder muscles, and screen for nerve involvement. Where clinically justified, X-rays may help show the shape of your neck and spine, and we'll explain why before referring you.

You'll get a clear explanation of what we find, in plain English, and a plan that fits around a busy work week.

What your plan will include

Here's exactly what happens when you come to Vitality with tech neck:

  • About an hour of detailed consultation and clinical assessment
  • Digital X-rays if clinically required, bulk billed with a valid Medicare card
  • Specific adjustments to assess whether change is possible for you
  • If change is possible, and it's what you want, a care plan built around you and your lifestyle
  • Specific neck and upper back stretches and exercises
  • Tools to support a healthy neck curve, and a pillow assessment
  • A desk set-up review (bring photos of your workspace)
  • Daily tips to improve your posture and help manage stress and tension

My promise to you

Hands-on care, exercise and changes to your desk and habits may help some people with posture-related neck pain, but everyone is different. I won't promise a set change in your posture or a set number of visits.

What I do promise is a thorough look at how your head, neck and upper back are sitting, an honest view on what's realistic, and regular check-ins on how it's going.

Meet the whole team

Set up your desk in 10 minutes

  1. Screen at eye level. Put your laptop on a stand or a stack of books and use a separate keyboard and mouse.
  2. Screen an arm's length away. If you lean in to read, make the text bigger.
  3. Feet flat, hips slightly higher than knees, and your back supported by the chair.
  4. Phone at eye level. Bring the phone up to your eyes, not your eyes down to the phone.
  5. Move every 30 minutes. Stand up, roll your shoulders back, and gently tuck your chin for 5 breaths.
  6. Take calls standing or walking when you can.

When to see someone

Most tech neck is a slow build-up rather than an emergency. But get medical help first if you have:

See a GP or go to emergency first if you have:

  • Neck pain after a fall, accident or knock to the head
  • Weakness in an arm or hand, or trouble with balance or walking
  • Neck pain with fever, unexplained weight loss or feeling generally unwell
  • Sudden severe headache, or problems with vision or speech

Book an assessment if:

  • Your neck or shoulders ache by the end of most work days
  • You're getting regular headaches from your neck
  • You've noticed your posture changing in photos
  • You want a plan and a desk set-up that fits your job

Frequently asked questions

Can a chiropractor help with tech neck?

Chiropractic care, combined with exercises and changes to your desk and habits, may help some people with neck and upper back pain linked to posture. We assess you first and tell you honestly whether it's a good fit.

What causes tech neck?

Hours looking down at phones, laptops and tablets drag the head forward of centre. The neck and upper back muscles work harder to hold it up, and over time the upper back can stiffen. Stress and inactivity add to it.

What is tech neck?

Tech neck is a common name for neck, shoulder and upper back pain linked to looking down at phones, laptops and screens for long periods. It isn't a formal diagnosis, but the pattern is very common in desk workers.

Can posture actually be improved?

Many people can improve how they sit and move with the right exercises and habits, but everyone is different and we can't promise a set change. We'll set realistic goals and review them with you.

Is tech neck the same as a dowager's hump?

Not exactly. Some people with long-term forward head posture develop a rounded upper back or a hump at the base of the neck. Our posture and neck hump page covers this in more detail.

How many visits will I need?

Everyone is different, so we can't promise a set number of visits. We set goals with you at the start, review your progress regularly, and change the plan if it isn't helping.

Should I see a chiropractor or a physio for tech neck?

Both are registered health professionals who can assess and manage tech neck. Chiropractors focus on how the spine, joints and nervous system work together. Physiotherapists focus on rehabilitation and exercise. Many people see both. What matters most is a thorough assessment and a clear plan.

Can I treat tech neck myself at home?

There's a lot you can do yourself. Keep moving gently, take regular breaks from sitting, and try the self-test and tips on this page. If it isn't settling after a week or two, keeps coming back, or you have any of the warning signs on this page, get it assessed.

What happens after my first visit?

You'll leave with a clear explanation of what we found, and what you can do at home straight away. If chiropractic care is a good fit and it's what you want, we'll talk you through a care plan. There's no pressure.

Can I get an appointment today?

Check our online booking for the next available time, or call (08) 9201 0566. We're open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and we'll fit you in as soon as we can.

Is chiropractic safe for tech neck?

For most people, chiropractic care from a registered chiropractor after a proper assessment is low risk. We screen for warning signs first, explain any risks, and use gentle techniques where appropriate. You can say no to any part of your care.

Do I need X-rays or a referral?

No referral is needed. X-rays are only recommended when they're clinically justified, and we'll explain why first. When they are needed, they're bulk billed with a valid Medicare card.

When should I see a GP instead?

See a GP or go to emergency first if you have any of the warning signs listed on this page. If we find anything during your assessment that needs medical care, we'll refer you.

How much does it cost, and can I claim on my health fund?

New clients who book online pay $85 for their first visit. We have HICAPS for on-the-spot claims with eligible private health funds, and your rebate depends on your fund and level of cover. See our pricing page for more.
