Chiropractor for Sports Injuries in Perth

It happens in a second. A tackle, a twist on the landing, one rep too many at the gym. You feel it go, and you know straight away this isn't one you can just run off.

Or it's crept up on you. The calf that tightens every Saturday. The shoulder that aches after every swim. The back that's stiff for two days after every round of golf.

Either way, you're on the sideline, watching your team, your training group or your mates carry on without you. At Vitality Chiropractic in Yokine, we work out exactly what's injured and why, talk you through it, and build a plan focused on getting you back to the sport you love.

How the guarantee works

What is a sports injury?

A sports injury is any damage to muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints or bones that happens through sport, training or exercise.

Sports injuries come in two kinds: the sudden ones, and the ones that build up. People often tell us about:

  • Sharp pain from a twist, fall or tackle
  • A joint that feels unstable or gives way
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Pain that builds through a season of training
  • Stiffness the day after sport that takes longer to settle each time
  • The same injury coming back in the same spot
  • Back or neck pain from golf, tennis, cycling or the gym

Why it happens

Sports injuries take one of two paths: the sudden injury, and the one that's built up over time.

A sudden injury is mostly physiology. Something has been strained or torn, and it needs time to heal. How long depends on which tissue it is:

  • Muscles have a rich blood supply, so they tend to heal fastest. A mild strain often settles within a few weeks.
  • Tendons connect muscle to bone. They have less blood supply, so they heal more slowly. Even a mild tendon injury usually takes several weeks.
  • Ligaments connect bone to bone. They're your anchors. Stretch or tear one, and recovery is often around three months, sometimes longer.

The injury that builds up over time

The second path is the one that really captures my attention. Nothing dramatic happened. It just wore out. And the question I want answered is why. Common contributors include:

  • A twist in the pelvis or a stiff lower back changing how you load your legs
  • A sudden jump in training after time off
  • A week at a desk, then a big weekend of sport
  • Weakness or imbalance from one side to the other
  • Poor recovery: sleep, warm-ups and rest days
  • An old injury that never fully settled

The real cost: you

Sport isn't just exercise. It's your team, your mates, your headspace. It's the Saturday morning run that clears your head, and the round of golf where the real conversations happen.

When you're injured, you lose all of that. You watch from the sideline. You miss the end of the season. You lose fitness you worked hard for, and a bit of who you are.

Add that up over a season. You're not just missing games. You're missing being you. Don't sit it out longer than you need to. Get it looked at. Live alive. Live you.

A note from Geoff

If it's a fresh tendon or muscle injury that just needs to heal, I'll tell you, and guide you to the right help, whether that's a physio or our massage therapists. Michelle and Chikako both offer sports and remedial massage, and Michelle also offers dry needling and cupping, to help you rehab it.

The long-term injuries are the ones I love to investigate. For runners and sports players especially, a twist in the pelvis is like driving a car with the wheels out of alignment. You can get to the shops and back without noticing a thing. But do the drive to Albany and back enough times, and the tyres start to wear unevenly. Then the suspension. Then the chassis. In your body, you feel it first in the soft parts: the tendons, muscles and joints that are taking the extra load.

So I start with gait analysis and the full-body picture: how you walk, run, land and balance, and how your pelvis, lower back, hips, knees and feet work together. Then we work on the areas actually driving the problem, and build exercises around the sport you play. That's the Vitality Method.

I really enjoy working with sports people. They're not just trying to get away from pain. They're moving towards something: performance, a goal, being able to do more. It's an exciting world to be part of.

Try this right now

Stand side-on to a mirror, near something you can hold for safety. Do five slow single-leg squats on your left leg, then your right. Does your knee dive inwards? Does your hip drop, or your body lean to one side? Is one leg clearly harder?

Side-to-side differences like these often explain why an injury keeps coming back.

How we assess sports injuries

We start with your sport and your story: how it happened, your training load, past injuries, and what you want to get back to.

Then we examine the injured area and the whole chain around it, including a gait analysis of how you walk and run, plus movement, strength and balance tests. We screen for anything that needs imaging, a sports doctor or a specialist, such as a suspected fracture or a full tear.

What your plan will include

Here's exactly what happens when you come to Vitality with a sports injury:

  • A detailed consultation and clinical assessment
  • Gait analysis: how you walk, run and land
  • Digital X-rays if clinically required, bulk billed with a valid Medicare card
  • Specific adjustments to assess whether change is possible for you
  • If change is possible, and it's what you want, a care plan built around you and your lifestyle
  • Sport-specific exercises and a step-by-step return-to-sport plan
  • Sports or remedial massage, dry needling or cupping with our massage therapists, if you'd like it
  • Advice on training load, warm-ups and recovery

My promise to you

Recovery varies a lot with the injury, your body and your sport. I won't promise a timeframe or a return date.

What I do promise is a proper look at why the injury happened, clear steps back to your sport, and a referral to a physio, sports doctor or for imaging when that's the right call.

Five habits to help prevent injury

  1. Warm up for 10 minutes with movements that match your sport.
  2. Build training up gradually after time off, rather than jumping straight back in.
  3. Stand up every 30 minutes during the work week, so your hips and back aren't stiff by the weekend.
  4. Do strength work twice a week for your glutes, core and upper back.
  5. Listen to niggles. A pain that changes how you move is a sign to back off and get it checked.

When to see someone

Get medical help first, not a chiropractor, if you have:

See a GP or go to emergency first if you have:

  • A suspected broken bone, a misshapen joint, or you can't put weight on your leg
  • A head knock with confusion, headache, vomiting or memory loss (possible concussion)
  • Severe swelling straight after the injury
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm or leg
  • A loud pop followed by sudden loss of strength or movement, for example in the knee

Book an assessment if:

  • A niggle or strain isn't settling
  • The same injury keeps coming back
  • You have back, neck or hip pain linked to your sport
  • You want a clear plan to get back to training

Frequently asked questions

Can a chiropractor help with sports injuries?

Chiropractic care, including adjustments, soft tissue work and exercise, may help some people with sports-related joint, muscle and spinal problems. We assess first, and refer you to a physio, sports doctor or for imaging when that's the right step.

What causes sports injuries?

Sudden injuries come from twists, falls, tackles and overstretching. Overuse injuries build when training load outpaces recovery, often after a jump in training, poor recovery, stiffness, or an old injury that never fully settled.

Can I keep training while I'm injured?

Often yes, with changes. We'll tell you what to avoid, what to modify, and when it's safe to build back up, based on your injury.

Do you offer sports massage?

Yes. Many of our sports clients combine chiropractic care with sports or remedial massage at the clinic.

When can I return to sport?

It depends on the injury, how it's responding and the demands of your sport. We'll set clear steps with you, so you build back up safely rather than guessing.

How many visits will I need?

Everyone is different, so we can't promise a set number of visits. We set goals with you at the start, review your progress regularly, and change the plan if it isn't helping.

Should I see a chiropractor or a physio for sports injuries?

Both are registered health professionals who can assess and manage sports injuries. Chiropractors focus on how the spine, joints and nervous system work together. Physiotherapists focus on rehabilitation and exercise. Many people see both. What matters most is a thorough assessment and a clear plan.

Can I treat sports injuries myself at home?

There's a lot you can do yourself. Keep moving gently, take regular breaks from sitting, and try the self-test and tips on this page. If it isn't settling after a week or two, keeps coming back, or you have any of the warning signs on this page, get it assessed.

What happens after my first visit?

You'll leave with a clear explanation of what we found, and what you can do at home straight away. If chiropractic care is a good fit and it's what you want, we'll talk you through a care plan. There's no pressure.

Can I get an appointment today?

Check our online booking for the next available time, or call (08) 9201 0566. We're open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and we'll fit you in as soon as we can.

Is chiropractic safe for sports injuries?

For most people, chiropractic care from a registered chiropractor after a proper assessment is low risk. We screen for warning signs first, explain any risks, and use gentle techniques where appropriate. You can say no to any part of your care.

Do I need X-rays or a referral?

No referral is needed. X-rays are only recommended when they're clinically justified, and we'll explain why first. When they are needed, they're bulk billed with a valid Medicare card.

When should I see a GP instead?

See a GP or go to emergency first if you have any of the warning signs listed on this page. If we find anything during your assessment that needs medical care, we'll refer you.

How much does it cost, and can I claim on my health fund?

New clients who book online pay $85 for their first visit. We have HICAPS for on-the-spot claims with eligible private health funds, and your rebate depends on your fund and level of cover. See our pricing page for more.
