How the guarantee works

What is pregnancy back and pelvic pain?

Pregnancy back and pelvic pain is pain in the lower back, buttocks, hips or front of the pelvis during pregnancy. It's common, and you may hear it called pelvic girdle pain (PGP) or symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD).

As your baby grows, your posture, balance and ligaments all change. Common complaints include:

  • Lower back pain, often worse at the end of the day
  • Pelvic girdle pain, including pain at the front of the pelvis (pubic symphysis)
  • Pain in the buttock or down the back of the leg
  • Hip pain, especially when lying on your side
  • Upper back, neck and rib pain as your posture shifts
  • Trouble getting comfortable at your desk or in bed

Why it happens

Pregnancy hormones loosen your ligaments to prepare for birth. Your centre of gravity moves forward, your lower back curve increases, and your pelvis takes on more load. Add long hours sitting at work, and it's no wonder things ache.

The real cost: you

Pregnancy is meant to be one of the most special times of your life. Instead, you're counting the hours until you can lie down, dreading the stairs, and getting through the work day on willpower alone.

You're too sore to walk with your partner after dinner. Too tired to enjoy setting up the nursery. And at night, when you finally lie down, the ache keeps you awake.

These months don't come back. Don't spend them just surviving. Get it looked at, and enjoy being you through this time. Live alive. Live you.

A note from Geoff

In 2004, I took a two-week locum in Gosforth, Newcastle, in England. It turned into a long stay, in a clinic that worked mainly with pregnant women and families.

Honestly, I didn't think it was going to be my cup of tea. I was 25, and I wanted to work with athletes and sports stars. But the chiropractor who took me in taught me something that changed how I practise. It wasn't about quick fixes. It was about looking after women through the whole course of their pregnancy, and becoming part of that journey, every step of the way. Seeing those families welcome their babies into the world was something special, and it's a big part of what made Vitality what it is today.

Today, we look after women right through pregnancy, up to the days before their due date. Your body changes fast, so I assess how your pelvis, hips and back are moving now, at this stage, and use gentle, pregnancy-adapted techniques with you lying comfortably on your side.

Your midwife, GP or obstetrician leads your pregnancy care. We work alongside them, never instead of them. We'll refer you back to them if anything concerns us, and we're happy to share notes with your permission. That's the Vitality Method, adapted for pregnancy: safe, careful and built around you.

Try this right now

Stand next to a bench for support and slowly lift one foot off the floor, as if stepping into your pants. Now the other. Does one side bring on pain at the front of your pelvis, your lower back or your buttock?

That's a clue, and it tells us where to start looking. Always check with your midwife or doctor about new pain in pregnancy.

How we assess you in pregnancy

We take a full history, including your pregnancy so far and any advice from your midwife, GP or obstetrician. Then we gently assess your back, pelvis and hips, using positions that are comfortable for you, such as lying on your side.

We screen carefully for anything that needs your pregnancy care team instead, and we'll tell you if chiropractic care isn't suitable for you right now.

Frequently asked questions

Can a chiropractor help with back and pelvic pain in pregnancy?

Chiropractic care, exercise and advice may help some people with pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain. We assess you first, adapt every technique to your stage of pregnancy, and work alongside your midwife, GP or obstetrician.

What causes back and pelvic pain in pregnancy?

Pregnancy hormones loosen your ligaments, your centre of gravity moves forward, your lower back curve increases and your pelvis takes on more load. Long hours sitting at work can add to it.

When in pregnancy can I come in?

You can come in at any stage. Let us know how many weeks you are when you book so we can plan your appointment.

How will I lie on the table?

We use side-lying positions and pregnancy support pillows so you and your baby are comfortable. You'll never be asked to lie in a way that feels wrong.

Do you offer pregnancy massage?

Yes. Our massage therapists offer pregnancy massage through all three trimesters.

How many visits will I need?

Everyone is different, so we can't promise a set number of visits. We set goals with you at the start, review your progress regularly, and change the plan if it isn't helping.

Should I see a chiropractor or a physio for pregnancy back and pelvic pain?

Both are registered health professionals who can assess and manage pregnancy back and pelvic pain. Chiropractors focus on how the spine, joints and nervous system work together. Physiotherapists focus on rehabilitation and exercise. Many people see both. What matters most is a thorough assessment and a clear plan.

Can I treat pregnancy back and pelvic pain myself at home?

There's a lot you can do yourself. Keep moving gently, take regular breaks from sitting, and try the self-test and tips on this page. If it isn't settling after a week or two, keeps coming back, or you have any of the warning signs on this page, get it assessed.

What happens after my first visit?

You'll leave with a clear explanation of what we found, and what you can do at home straight away. If chiropractic care is a good fit and it's what you want, we'll talk you through a care plan. There's no pressure.

Can I get an appointment today?

Check our online booking for the next available time, or call (08) 9201 0566. We're open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and we'll fit you in as soon as we can.

Is it safe to see a chiropractor while pregnant?

For most people with an uncomplicated pregnancy, gentle chiropractic care from a registered chiropractor is considered low risk. We assess you first, adapt every technique to your stage of pregnancy, and work alongside your midwife, GP or obstetrician.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly online or by phone.

When should I see a GP instead?

See a GP or go to emergency first if you have any of the warning signs listed on this page. If we find anything during your assessment that needs medical care, we'll refer you.

How much does it cost, and can I claim on my health fund?

New clients who book online pay $85 for their first visit. We have HICAPS for on-the-spot claims with eligible private health funds, and your rebate depends on your fund and level of cover. See our pricing page for more.
