What Is Remedial Massage and Who Is It For?
Some days your shoulders feel like they're up around your ears. Your lower back is tight after a week of long shifts, or your calves are still complaining after Saturday's run. A relaxing massage is lovely, but sometimes you want someone to find the exact spot that's bothering you and work on it.
That's where remedial massage comes in. Here's what it is, how it differs from relaxation massage, and what to expect.
How remedial massage is different
Relaxation massage aims to help you unwind, using long, flowing strokes over the whole body. Remedial massage is more targeted. Your therapist assesses where you're tight or sore, then uses specific techniques to work on those areas.
Remedial massage therapists may use:
- Deep tissue techniques for tight muscles
- Trigger point work for knotted or tender spots
- Myofascial release
- Stretching and movement during the treatment
The pressure is always adjusted to what's comfortable for you.
Who it can suit
People often book remedial massage for:
- Neck and shoulder tightness from desk work and screens
- Lower back tightness
- Muscle soreness from sport, training or physical work
- Tension linked to stress
- Recovery after long or demanding weeks
What to expect at your appointment
Your therapist will start by asking about your concerns, your health history and any injuries. They may check how you're moving, then explain their approach before starting. During the massage, let them know if the pressure needs to change. Afterwards, they may suggest stretches or habits to keep you feeling good between visits.
It's normal to feel a little tender for a day or so after remedial massage, especially if it's your first time. Drinking water and gentle movement can help.
Remedial massage and chiropractic together
At Vitality, our remedial massage therapists and chiropractors work at the same clinic. Some people use both: chiropractic care for their joints and movement, and remedial massage for muscle tightness. Your practitioners can talk to each other (with your permission) so your care fits together.
Health fund rebates
Remedial massage may be claimable through private health insurance extras cover, depending on your fund and level of cover. Check with your health fund for details.
